WHAT DO WE WORSHIP?

2024, Recycled Fabric

This piece was made during my final semester at Cedarville University as a project for my Advanced Sculpture class. We were assigned to make a quilt, conventional or not. I took inspiration from Zac Foster and other modern quilters who used their craft to make statements and ask questions. My father is a political science professor, which has kept my entire family tuned in with world events, the political climate, and local government. The past few presidential elections have been big topics of conversation in our household and community. I wanted to create a piece that would force viewers to take a moment and answer the question what do I worship? Who do I worship? Why do I worship?

Far too many Christians have been swept up in the political climate of the United States over the past ten years. It seems like churches feel the need to take a stance, to endorse, to hunt for which candidate aligns with their views. These things aren’t always bad, but the more Christians focus on politics from the pulpit, the closer political figures get to god-like reverence. I’ve seen many friends, family members, and public figures—all who claim to be Christians—elevating specific leaders to a status in their lives that was previously reserved for Christ. I made this quilt to serve as a chance for people to look inwards. To ask themselves the question, What am I worshipping?
