artist statement
My time as an artist is spent in clay, oil paint, wood, and charcoal. Removing objects from a familiar context and reimagining them as containers for memories of relationships, history, and culture is the basis for much of my work. This is explored by uniting found and made objects, painting onto family quilts, and finishing ceramics by weaving personal materials throughout. My pieces span several mediums, repeating patterns reminiscent of the past, curving lines, floral imagery, cursive handwriting, things we all once shared. Memorializing seemingly trivial things by giving them a permanent armor or resting place drives me to create. This results in a blend of functional and sculptural ceramics.
My family and the past have been consistent themes throughout my undergraduate career. I have worked to better know those around me by creating pieces with their input, imagery of our lives together, and shared experiences. Feelings of home and community are often created through warm colors, organic shapes, weaving, braiding, and visual hierarchy in my work. These convey the idea of being in relationship with others, or family. I often create to commemorate and process the human experience.
